Dolby Atmos: what it is, how it works, and why it matters
In recent years, the term Dolby Atmos has become synonymous with immersive audio. We encounter it in cinema, on streaming platforms, and in gaming. But what is it really and why is it considered a revolution? In a nutshell, Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to listening: not only do sounds surround us, but we also perceive them above our heads. It is a step up from classic multichannel systems and changes the way we experience movies and video games.
At Garvan Acoustic, we believe that it is not just about technology, but about culture: Atmos redefines the language with which a sound experience is told.
What is Dolby Atmos
Unlike traditional channel-based systems, in which each speaker receives a fixed signal (right, left, rear…), Dolby Atmos works with sound objects. A voice, a shot of rain or a helicopter are no longer tied to a channel, but are treated as independent objects with coordinates in three-dimensional space.
The playback system then takes care of placing them where they need to be: in front, behind, to the sides or above the listener. The result is a dynamic, natural and believable soundscape.
How it works
At the heart of Dolby Atmos is the renderer, which translates the metadata of sound objects and distributes it in real time to available speakers. In this way, a movie mixed in Atmos will sound as good in a movie theater as in a living room.
With a configuration 5.1.2 you introduce two “height” channels (ceiling or upfiring) for the vertical effect.
With a system 7.1.4 side and rear surrounds plus four heights are added, approaching the output of a dedicated hall.
Why it is different from traditional systems
The leap from previous formats is sharp: in a classic 5.1, sounds are constrained to six channels, while in Atmos they can move freely. This brings three concrete advantages:
- Precise movement of sound along the room.
- Vertical dimension that completes the sound sphere.
- Adaptability to the number and arrangement of speakers.
Where it is used
Cinemas – Modern theaters are increasingly adopting Atmos systems, allowing films to be experienced as the director intended.
Music – Dolby Atmos streaming brings more enveloping spatial listening, even in headphones thanks to binaural processing.
Gaming and VR – Compatible consoles and PCs bring realism and directional precision inside the action.
Home Theatre – In the home, integration is clean and elegant with speakers in-wall LUNA e on-wall CORO, combined with ceiling or recessed “height” channels for vertical effects.

We do not talk about live “concerts” because, by nature, sound is frontal. Except for “Dolby Live” at Park MGM in Las Vegas, a concert hall specifically designed and equipped by Dolby to provide a spatial audio experience in real time. World-renowned artists have held residencies and performances there making full use of Dolby Atmos technology.
Dolby Atmos in your home
Bringing Atmos into the home does not mean disrupting rooms-the key is a coherent design of the listening space.
- Front stage defined and invisible with LUNA in-wall (L/C/R) or elegant with CORO on-wall.
- Side and rear surrounds coordinated with the chosen line.
- Ceiling/recessed “height” channels to create the sound dome.
- Subwoofer calibrated to better integrate the low range.
From 5.1.2 configurations (entry into the Atmos world) to 7.1.4 for dedicated rooms, the goal is the same: sound that fills the space and supports visual storytelling with precision.
Why it matters
Atmos is now the new standard by which movies, series and albums are produced: content is already being born with this technology in mind. For the listener, it means more intense emotions and more realistic details.
Simply put, Dolby Atmos is not a passing fad, but the natural evolution of the way we experience audio: it enriches the emotional experience and makes us really feel in the middle of the action.
We at Garvan Acoustic integrate this technology into elegant, strictly Made in Italy systems to bring cinema and gaming to a new level of realism.
